Integrating women's expertise into agrifood systems in Africa?

Despite their significant contributions to agriculture and food security, women remain underrepresented in management and leadership within agriculture and food systems. Gender norms and barriers restrict their leadership opportunities which, in turn,  undermines the inclusivity and effectiveness of agrifood governance.

Hesat2030 researchers, led by the Juno Evidence Alliance and in partnership with Cornell University, will undertake a rigorous evidence synthesis review to better understand the range of definitions linked to the terms “management” and “leadership” and how these definitions have affected capacity-development interventions for women. The review will analyse the inclusion of these terms in the published literature relevant to agrifood systems in Africa.

Ultimately, the evidence synthesis will provide a  mapping of gender-focused leadership interventions, help redefine capacity development frameworks, and generate actionable insights that will shape future investments and policies to close gender gaps in Africa’s agrifood systems.
